Service Description

This group course will help you prepare your mind and body for the birth of your baby. Held in a cosy and safe space, 8 couples meet over a 4 week period. Week 1: The first session is about getting to know everyone, because this group will become your support network for years to come! I guide you through what labour will feel like and teach you how to know you are in labour and of course, what to do when you are. We go through what a normal labour ending in vaginal birth will entail. We will discuss birth choices and explore the possibility of every choice available (hospital births, home births and the use of birth centre’s) There is also special attention paid to the “what if’s” that surround childbirth. For example, a forceps birth/c-section/neonatal care admission. I will give you practical tips on how to cope with this and reassure you that these outcomes don’t have to impact on your mental or physical health. The role of the birthing partner is always discussed at each topic – it is about both of you! Week 2: So, now you know what is involved in labour and birth, I will inform you of all your options regarding coping strategies and pain relief. I teach breathing and pushing techniques that you could use for the birth. We discuss the benefits and disadvantages of all the pain relief choices during a very honest and open chat. Often couples discuss their own experiences. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable. Week 3: The third week is infant feeding. I will explain (and demonstrate with props) colostrum harvesting and breastfeeding. We discuss positioning and attachment in depth, with supporting literature to help you remember in the future. I also discuss artificial feeding and the use of teets. Of course, it may not always go to plan. So fear not, I cover everything you will need to know if you face any issues and what to do if/when this happens. This session is so relaxed and there is absolutely no judgement. You feed your baby however you prefer. An informed choice is the best one! Week 4: The last week is about the immediate postnatal period for you and your baby. The topics covered are feeding, thermoregulation, nappy changing, bathing, safe sleeping, contraception, the role of the community midwife, support you have on offer and your mood postnatally (including signs of postnatal depression). This is a very hands on session with some babies and dirty nappies that need changing… with lots of giggles of course!
